How to choose an IPTV player: a 12-point checklist

There is no single best IPTV player for everyone. The best one is the player that handles your playlist, your devices and the way you watch without getting in the way. These 12 checks cover what actually separates a good player from a frustrating one, from speed with big playlists to the TV guide, catch-up, remote control, privacy and price, with a way to test each one during a free trial. For every point we also say, in a line, how Telyqro handles it, so you can hold us to the same standard.

First: a player includes no channels

An IPTV player is like a web browser for TV streams: it plays what you give it. The channels, films and series come from the service you subscribe to, as an Xtream Codes login or an M3U link. A player that comes with channels built in is not a player, and you have no way to know whether those streams are licensed.

Playlists and speed

1. The playlist formats it supports

Look for: Xtream Codes login and M3U or M3U8 links at the very least, plus a way to load an M3U file. Xtream gives you films, series and catch-up with better structure; see Xtream Codes vs M3U for the differences.

Test it: add your playlist the way your provider delivers it. If you have both kinds of login, try both and compare what appears under films and series.

Telyqro: Xtream Codes, M3U and M3U8 links, and M3U files uploaded on telyqro.com. When you add a get.php M3U link, the app recognises it and offers to import it in Xtream mode.

2. Speed with big playlists

Look for: fast imports that run in the background, and lists that scroll smoothly however many entries there are. Many playlists have tens of thousands of entries; some have hundreds of thousands.

Test it: time the first import. Then open the largest category and hold the down key or scroll hard. Refresh the playlist and see whether the screen freezes while it works.

Telyqro: 300,000 entries import in about 3.6 seconds on a desktop, in the background, and lists stay smooth at 300,000 rows, even on a remote.

TV guide and catch-up

3. A TV guide (EPG) that is right

Look for: now and next on every channel row, a full guide grid you can browse ahead, and automatic guide refreshes. The guide data comes from your provider, but the player decides how well it is matched and shown.

Test it: check five channels against what is actually on air. Come back the next day and see whether the guide refreshed on its own. If it is empty, our EPG troubleshooting guide explains the usual causes.

Telyqro: now and next on every channel row, and a full guide grid with a 30-minute time axis and a line for now, from the playlist’s XMLTV guide or the Xtream login, refreshed in the background.

4. Catch-up

Look for: a way to watch past programmes from the guide, start a programme from the beginning, and return to live. It only works if your provider offers catch-up on that channel, so the player has to read your provider’s catch-up information correctly.

Test it: find a channel your provider lists with catch-up, go back in the guide to a programme that has already aired and play it. Then try starting the current programme from its beginning. Background in IPTV catch-up explained.

Telyqro: past programmes from the guide, watch from the start and back to live, for Xtream archives and the common M3U catch-up formats.

5. Films and series that remember where you were

Look for: resume where you stopped, a series page with seasons and episodes, watched marks, and the next episode ready to play.

Test it: stop a film halfway, close the app completely, open it again and see whether it offers to resume. Finish an episode and see what happens next.

Telyqro: resume or start over, a Continue watching row, watched marks and “Continue S2E5” on series, and the next episode starting after a 10-second countdown (you can turn that off).

6. Search that finds things

Look for: search across live TV, films and series at once, matching any part of a name, not only the start.

Test it: search for a word from the middle of a title, a name with an accent typed without it, and a channel in another alphabet if your playlist has one.

Telyqro: searches by any part of a name, ignoring accents, in any script.

Remote control and family use

7. Remote-friendly zapping

Look for: an interface built for a TV remote, not a phone app stretched to fit. Channel up and down inside the category you are in, typing a channel number, a previous-channel key, and a channel list you can open over the picture.

Test it: put the mouse or touch screen away and use only the remote for ten minutes. Zap through ten channels, type a channel number, jump back to the previous channel, and see whether focus is always visible.

Telyqro: all of the above, plus favorites zapping that stays inside your favorites. Remote, keyboard, mouse and touch all work.

8. Parental controls

Look for: a PIN that can lock whole groups as well as single channels, films and series, and locked content that stays out of search, favorites and the guide too. A lock that search can get around isn’t a lock.

Test it: lock a group, then search for a channel in it, and try reaching it by channel number. See our parental controls guide for a full checklist.

Telyqro: a 4-digit PIN for any group, channel, film or series; adult groups locked automatically; locked content masked or hidden everywhere, search included; a back-off after five wrong PINs.

Devices, reliability and privacy

9. Your devices, and what carries over

Look for: apps for every screen in your home, an easy way to add a playlist on a TV without typing a long password with the remote, and backups so a reinstall doesn’t wipe your favorites and settings.

Test it: set up a second device. How long does it take? Uninstall and reinstall the app: what is left?

Telyqro: available now on Android, Android TV and Google TV, Fire TV, Windows and Linux; macOS, iPhone and iPad, and Samsung and LG TVs are coming soon. Playlists added on telyqro.com arrive on the device by themselves. Favorites, settings and locks are backed up automatically and offered for restore on a fresh install. Watch history stays on each device.

10. Recovery when a stream drops

Look for: automatic reconnection when a live stream stalls, clear error messages instead of a black screen, and settings for providers with special needs, such as the stream format or a custom User-Agent.

Test it: during a live channel, switch off your router’s Wi-Fi for ten seconds, or unplug the network cable, then reconnect. Does the picture come back by itself?

Telyqro: streams reconnect by themselves when they stall; you can choose TS or HLS for live channels and set a User-Agent per playlist or channel. If buffering is constant, the cause is usually elsewhere: see IPTV buffering fixes.

11. Privacy and security

Look for: a privacy policy that says plainly what the developer collects, where your provider login is stored, and whether your streams pass through the developer’s servers. Your IPTV password is a credential, so treat it like one.

Test it: read the privacy policy before you type your password in. If it doesn’t answer those three questions, that is your answer.

Telyqro: streams go straight from your provider to your device, never through us, and we don’t see what you watch. Playlists you sync are stored on our servers so they can reach your device, with passwords and M3U links encrypted. Provider passwords are hidden in logs and on-screen errors, and every request from the device is signed. The details are in our privacy policy.

Price and trial

12. A fair pricing model and a real trial

Look for: a trial long enough to test everything above with every feature on, without a card. Then check what you pay for: one device or several, a year or for good, and where the payment happens.

Test it: before the trial ends, write down which features you used. Price it for every device you plan to use, not just one.

Telyqro: 14 days free on every device, every feature, no card; reinstalling doesn’t restart it. Then Yearly or Lifetime, per device, bought on telyqro.com with PayPal or cryptocurrency; the app itself never charges you. Current prices are on the pricing section.

A one-evening trial plan

You can run most of these checks in one evening. In this order, nothing gets skipped:

  1. Add your playlist and time the import (points 1 and 2).
  2. Check now and next on five channels and browse ahead in the guide (point 3).
  3. Play something from catch-up if your provider offers it (point 4).
  4. Start a film, stop it, restart the app and resume (point 5).
  5. Search for three awkward names (point 6).
  6. Zap for ten minutes with only the remote (point 7).
  7. Lock a group and try to find it through search (point 8).
  8. Drop the network for ten seconds during a live channel (point 10).
  9. Read the privacy policy and the pricing page (points 11 and 12).

Leave point 9 for the next day, when you set up a second screen. To run the list on Telyqro, get it from the download page or read the full feature list first.

Questions

Does an IPTV player come with channels?

No. A player plays the playlist you add from the service you subscribe to. Be wary of any app that comes with channels already in it, and only use services you are legally entitled to watch.

Is a free IPTV player good enough?

It can be, for a small playlist on one device. Run the same 12 checks either way. Free apps often fall short on big-playlist speed, the TV guide and remote control, and it is worth asking how a free app is paid for, and where it stores your login.

What is the difference between an IPTV player and an IPTV service?

The service (your provider) supplies the channels and the login. The player is the app that plays them. You can change one without the other: the same login works in any player that supports its format.

Do I need a separate player license for each device?

It depends on the player, so check before you buy. Telyqro is licensed per device: each one gets its own 14-day trial and its own Yearly or Lifetime plan.
